It has long been shown that exposure to the out of doors is good for a human, feeds their soul and recharges their lives.. and that "the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man" (Winston Churchill) but what happens when you combine those two premises?
In recent studies done in NC, VA, GA & TN with retirement aged populations, its been shown to increase not only the longevity of a person's life (by an average of 5 yrs) but also the subjective "quality" of that life.
One of those studied (let's call her Jane Doe) stated "my blood pressure went from a dangerous 145 to a stable 120 after I bought my mare Summer. My Doctor was concerned about my quality of life, my husband had recently died and my friends were not very active. Summer has added purpose to my life, I have a reason to get up every morning, she relies on me to take care of her. And then, we explore the woods together. "
Similar stories to Jane's seem to be the norm, transferring worry & self doubt to responsibility and exploration, people enjoying their equine partner and the freedom & sense of adventure they share as they venture out into the Forests.
"Public lands and equestrian access are key here" states (let's call him John Doe). "Without the lands to explore, riders as well as bikers and hikers would lose the ability to "adventure" (used as a verb) and this will diminish the human spirit over time".
All those studied agreed, the partnership with their horse & the experience of getting outdoors helps them to enjoy their retirement years.
