Mansfield Ohio - Sheriff's deputies say a Detroit man used stolen credit card information to buy $100,000 in merchandise, including $40,000 at Richland County businesses.

The arrest of Sharode Dontae Mitchell is one of several in recent days by Richland County sheriff's deputies investigating numerous identity-theft and credit card fraud cases, detective Sgt. Ben Cammenga said Monday, August 13th. Police say the suspects, from the Detroit area, used stolen credit card information to buy gift cards, iPads, electronic games and other products.

The arrest of Mitchell’s came after police in January investigated a report that merchandise at a Byron Township store was bought with a stolen credit card.

Police eventually linked Mitchell to fraudulent purchases at a minimum of four Richland county businesses, police say.

On Friday, August 10th sheriff's deputies arrested Sharode. Sheriff's deputies and Detroit police then searched two Detroit homes where police found property such as a sofa, television and collectible coins bought with stolen account numbers.

Police also found hundreds of credit cards, credit-card numbers, Social Security numbers, personal information and equipment to encode magnetic strips on credit cards with stolen account information.

Police say identity thieves obtain stolen account information on the Internet.

Sharode was charged with larceny over $20,000, unlawful use of a computer and illegal use of a financial transaction device.

On Saturday, deputies contacted two people who made "suspicious purchases of cigarettes with gift cards" at a gas station in Akron Ohio, Police say they had several gift cards with magnetic strips that had been reprogrammed with stolen credit-card information.

They also had 18 cartons of cigarettes that police believe were bought with stolen account information. Deputies tracked the fraudulent purchases to two other Kent County businesses.

One of the suspects, Devoisier Newsome, 23, was arrested for possession of a fraudulent transaction device, police said.

Also Monday , deputies responded to a report of several people smoking marijuana in the parking lot of the Cascade Township Meijer store. Police found a small amount of marijuana but became suspicious when they found numerous gift cards, Visa Green Dot cards, 10 iPad Airs, four boxes of shoes, a PlayStation 4, a hoverboard and clothing.

Police recovered $7,000 in merchandise and said the suspects were responsible for fraud "thought to be in the tens of thousands of dollars," Cammenga she aid.

Police arrested Desean Porter, 26, Arthur Jackson, 26, and Jennifer Harris, 25, for possession of a fraudulent financial transaction device, police said.

In an unrelated case, police are looking for a woman who used stolen credit card information to set up an account and buy four iPhone 6 phones for $2,600 from the Sprint store in Byron Township in early August .

She did the same thing at two other Sprint stores in the area, police said.

Anyone with information on her identity is asked to call sheriff's detectives at 632-6100, ext. 6, or Silent Observer at 774-2345.
