President Trump met with security advisors today to detail plans for a national defense program that "will encircle the globe" and will include "many great leaders". President Trump refused to take questions after this announcement but white house spoke person Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the panel is slated to include Vladimir Putin and Kim Jung Un among other foreign leaders to establish "America's willingness to work towards global safety."
President Trump later tweeted "Space aliens have been entering our air space for decades and until we know their intentions, we must be prepared! They have sent messages to the White House. This is something we have to do! It’s a national security imperative.”
The President's claim breaks decades of previous administrations denial of alien contact, and is being met with skepticism from both democrats and republicans. "He has lost his freaking mind" senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said to stunned NBC correspondent, Hallie Jackson, following Huckabee's statements. "Space force was one thing, this is insane" he said.
Members of the Presidents new space initiative did not share the senator's assessment. The idea of a space force “is not a new thing,” said Stuart O. Witt, an aerospace executive and a member of the White House’s National Space Council Users Advisory Group. “The president just acted upon it. This is the next logical step. We need to be certain we can handle any contingency, we have visual confirmation of extraterrestrial bases on the moons of Jupiter".
But Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), one of the early supporters of a separate service, complained that Trump’s impromptu announcement “hijacked” the issue and would vastly inflate the budget process. “These vendors are the presidents friends and are excited at the prospect of an explosion of new spending, he will try to push anything through to line their pockets, this new claim is pure nonsense" he said.
