In a bizarre turn of events on Capital Hill on Monday, a number of top ranking Democrats face indictments ranging from theft to lying under oath.
Congressional House leaders Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) New York were all served FBI indictments on Monday afternoon in their respective offices. All three elected officials were charged with theft in office. Maxine Waters was also charged with perjury for her testimony to the Federal Banking Commission as well as the IRS. Congresswoman Waters gave testimony concerning loans that she obtained in 2012 and 2014. The loans were found to have been obtained under false pretenses concerning her planned use of the loans and her collateral used to obtain the loans. Investigators found that Real Estate holdings that Waters used for collateral for the two seperate loans totalling $6 million did not in fact belong to the Congresswoman. The Real Estate actually belonged to California movie mogul Harvey Weinstein who himself faces sexual assault charges in New York City. In a scheme concocted by Waters and Weinstein they misled banking officials at Chase Bank. The scheme involved forging documents to make Weinstein's Real Estate holdings appear to actually belong to Waters. To date none of the $6 million loans has been repaid. The scheme was uncovered when Chase Bank began forclosure of the Real Estate used as collateral. Waters met with Federal Banking officials in May of this year and IRS officials in June of this year. It is unclear to what extent Weinstein's involvement was in the scheme or why Waters had not repaid the loans.
Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer were charged wiith theft in office for directing funds intended for use as office construction in their respective office buildings to their own personal use. The amounts range from twenty thousand for Pelosi to 24 thousand for Schumer. It is unclear if these charges will affect the trios reelection bids in November.
