"They live back in here. I have seen them up close. I'm amazed that with all the hunting done around here that someone has not gotten a picture of one. They are incredibly elusive and there are parts of swamplands here that humans have never seen. When I first moved to Gates County I was driving down Fort Island Rd to Ray's Beach a very curvy road when I came around a curve I slowed down and came to a complete stop as a full grown cougar walked across the street in front of my vehicle. It was in no hurry it just slowly walked across the road. I was thinking to myself WOW I knew there were bears here but I didn't know they had Cougars. I watched the thing walk into the woods and thought that was cool. I guess this is a regular occurance around here. Well come to find out the wildlife biologists say that they are extinct. To that I SAY BULLSHIT..." said Daniel Jeffries Gates County resident since 2005.
