Police found drugs worth nearly $150,000 along with guns and gear at a storage facility on South Tryon Street this week, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Lt. Patrick
Suspect 27, is wanted for trafficking methamphetamine and synthetic marijuana along with felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.
An anonymous tip on August 30 led police to the Public Storage facility on the 9400 block of South Tryon Street, which is less than a block away from CMPD's Steele Creek Division office.
Suspect was arrested on traffic charges and interviewed by detectives, Matthews said, and police got search warrants for two storage units.
The suspect was living in one unit, Matthews said, and they were so full that police spent two days emptying them out.
"It was floor to ceiling packed," he said. "Never quite seen anything like it before."
In the storage units, police found drugs and gear — a shotgun, an AR-15 rifle, night vision goggles and two sets of body armor.
"The propensity for violence surrounding that level of narcotics dealer, in our opinion, is clearly evident," Matthews said.
The drugs included 3 kilograms of methamphetamine worth about $110,000, along with marijuana, synthetic marijuana, half a pound of THC oil, several grams of crystal meth and some Xanax, police said.
Matthews said it was particularly interesting to find so much THC oil, which can be smoked or vaped and is popular with young people, according to police.
The problem is that it's so highly concentrated with THC that a lot of these young kids don't realize what they're ingesting and easily overdose on these types of chemicals," he said. "Kind of a new thing for us. We've been investigating it for a while, we've seen it before, but this was a really large quantity of it."
Matthews said The suspect was a mid-level dealer and refused to say whether police are investigating the sources of the drugs found in the storage units.
