A rebirth of separatist movements in the Azores is evident. It is present in the streets, with graffitis visible all over town, and it is oppenly discussed amongst azoreans of all ages and backgrounds.
The sense of the azoreans is that the movement is growing and that there is a need for action. This all seems to come as an answer to a neocolonialism imposed from Lisbon. Like in other european regions, azoreans feel that their autonomy is being crushed by a renewed centralism from Lisbon and Brussels, and that it is becoming an instrument that allows for an reimplementation of a culture of extrative colonialism.
Among several complains, azoreans are concerned that the absolute loss of sovereignty over the Azorean sea, one of the biggest sea territories in Europe, will be devastating to the future of the Azores. They believe that Lisbon is prepared to, under the umbrella of the portugueses constituition, take the profits from the blue economy generated by exploration of the azorean sea and will keep the azoreans chained to the crums left over from the portuguese anual budget.
Unlike in other autonomies of Europe, the portuguese constituition does not allow for local or separatist movements to organize themselfs or participate in the democratic process. The separatist movements will have to find other ways to materialize the support of the azoreans. If they do, the Azores will be a region in Europe to keep an eye on in the near future.
