PENN LAIRD - Following Tuesday nights Spotswood victory, referee Mitchell Leap of Rockingham was criticized for an unfair and unneeded technical foul called on Spotswood's Angel Pacheco-Ortiz. The foul was called after a Pacheco-Ortiz dunk and Leap misjudged that the star forward hung on the rim. Replays showed that Pacheco-Ortiz didn't hang on the rim. The technical results in Pacheco-Ortiz being suspended for the first game of the Region 3C Quarter finals. Leap was criticized by local fans that claim he has family ties to Elkton, which now feeds East Rockingham High School, and that Leap will do whatever it takes to penalize their rival Spotswood against any opponent. Leap was unavailable for comment but faces suspension by the county. He was seen leaving the gym in a Tupac "Me against the World" tee shirt, which it appears he will be wearing more often in the near future rather than his normal zebra stripes.
Spotswood faces the lowly Fort Defiance Indians to open region play. Fort couldn't beat their way out of a wet paper bag, so the suspension will likely have no affect.
