A woman in southeast Iowa was admitted to the hospital recently with severe bites to her arms and legs. The attack happened on Highway 92 not far from a small town called Delta. A woman approached a raccoon that appeared to be dead and attempted to place a "Get Well Soon" helium balloon from Dollar Tree on the animal. The animal was suffering but not yet dead and attacked the woman, causing her to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. The wounds were swabbed and found to have traces of antigens common in rabid animals. As a safety precaution, the woman was also treated with the painful injections to prevent rabies infections.

The woman reportedly noticed the animal early in the morning and then made a trip to Oskaloosa to purchase a balloon to tie to the animal. A Dollar Tree employee that was asked about the story informed us that, "We wouldn't recommend using our balloons to decorate dead animals, but we really have no control over what folks do with the balloons once they leave."

An internet meme gained popularity over the last few years where folks are tying "get well soon" balloons to dead animals as a joke or prank.

Names of the injured were withheld by request.
