20th Century Fox announced late Wednesday night that they plan to make and distribute a 2D, traditionally animated film based off the popular comic strip about a boy and his stuffed tiger created by Bill Watterson, and will be directed by Ron Howard. The announcement came as a surprise for many, as Watterson has been well known for his refusal to license his characters in any way shape or form. 20th Century Fox said in a statement that they had approached Watterson earlier this year and were shut down by Watterson, though later agreed after the parties came to a mutual agreement that Watterson would have full creative control of the film.
Not much else about the film is known at this time, though 20th Century Fox stated that within the week they had reached out to Tom Kenny and Owen Wilson respectively to voice the title roles, but had not heard back from them.
The film is planned for a Winter 2022 release.
