In the past few years, many alternative lifestyles have popped up, mainly dominated by young millennials. Of these, the Tiny House movement comes to mind, but now it seems there is a more niche variety: live board games.

Twenty four year old Cody Watts, a recent graduate from the University of Toronto, has saved up enough money to make two purchases: a Toyota, and a copy of the classic family board game The Game of Life.
“It’s not really something you’d expect someone like me to do,” he said.

Cody has converted every square to mean 50 miles, and has replaced the iconic spinner with a system of driving to the nearest town. He usually goes to hotels, and “stealth camps” every so often.

“I have a pretty rigid schedule,” Cody tells me. “I wake up at 5:00 in the morning, I have my coffee, maybe an Egg McMuffin, then I hit the road to the nearest town. If I make it before 6 PM, I go to the next town over.”

On his Twitter, Cody posts about his travels, and updates where he is on the board. So far, he has travelled 615 miles across Canada, equating to about 12 spaces on the board. He says he will start over if he is not of retirement age by the time he finishes.

Adding to the time it takes to move over to another board, Cody frequently stops and works on cell data from his car. He finishes any overtime he builds up on weekends and holidays.
“This isn’t really a life for the faint of heart,” he tells me, “it’s for people who truly feel a connection to the board.”
