Supply chain security; generally encompasses the efforts to reduce risk (both external and internal threats) such as terrorism, piracy, and theft, both in the real world and in the cyber-space. Hence Supply Chain Security involves the protection of a country or nation against both products leaving and contraband entering the supply chain. The supply chain includes importers, foreign manufacturers, consolidators; brokers, ocean, sea and rail carriers and third-party logistics providers. It is impossible to eliminate physical threats to supply chain security completely, the physical threats of supply chain security it is more of traditional means of harm, such as theft, sabotage and piracy. These types of threats can come from both internal and external sources. For example, a cargo ship may be hijacked by pirates, this is an external threat. Internal(insider) sources such as disgruntled employees stealing or sabotaging inventory. To combat these physical threats there is the need for countries to;
1. Use a standardized identification and credentials for supply chain participants.
2. Employ advanced locking mechanisms on cargo as well as tamper-proof seals.
3. Utilized state-of-the-art track and trace technology to receive real time updates on the status of various shipments.
4. Screen employees thoroughly with a focus on values to reduce risk of internal threats.
5. Use standardized inspection procedures as well as mobile technology applications on cargo entering every node within a supply chain.
Depending on the location, companies , supply types/data and risks, supply chain security calls for the use of both traditional/physical security technologies and tech unique such as seals, global positioning and more sophisticated locating and tracking applications.
