Many socio-economic activities threaten human and environmental health. Among them, it is the use of pesticides (pesticides, insecticides, etc.) in agriculture, which has quadrupled itself in the last four years in the Támara's region. This has ended up affecting food, soil, air and water, according to a report on the region by Ecologists Without Borders (see report). Many of these substances have been classified as carcinogens and/or endocrine disruptors (affecting the endocrine and reproductive systems) by the World Health Organization (WHO), and their impact extends to both rural and urban environments and the different species that inhabit them.

The WHO also points out that water pollution is one of the main causes of death and disease worldwide, with alarming global values amounting to fourteen thousand people a day. Rivers are one of the main environments affected. Thus, when chemical substances derived from agriculture are released there, they are quickly transported along their course, reaching different organisms. In the case of human beings, they can be more or less exposed to the contaminating agents depending on where they live (distance between home and source of contamination), where they work (being more exposed, in this case, if they are dedicated to agricultural activities), or what food they eat (source from which they come).

Many cases of water pollution around the world have been reported in the media, triggering public concern about water quality. Among the most famous cases that have been analyzed is the contamination of the Aguasnegras river (region of Támara) and of rural localities near agricultural fields (Figure 1), which has caused reproductive problems in part of the population and in other organisms such as Chironomus riparius. This is a species known as harlequin fly whose larvae develop in aquatic or semi-aquatic environments such as river mud (Figure 2). In the field of Toxicology, they are used as sentinel organisms that, as they manifest symptoms early, provide an early warning of danger to humans.
