From a new order by Prime Minister Boris Johnson all students currently in Years 9-11 are to be given GCSE grade 9s following the disruption to work by Coronavirus.

"It's the least we could do," explained Boris to our news correspondent, "I can't let the students not be rewarded for their hard work over the most recent years of their lives." According to Boris the new measures will ensure that all students get rewarded for the work they have done. This will be necessary for many students who will not be able to take their GCSEs in the upcoming months.

Not everyone is pleased about the new scheme. Sceptical teachers believe that gifting everyone a grade 9 misses the point of the system. It's not about what grade you get, it's about what opportunities you open up later in life. If everyone gets a grade 9 the grade is meaningless. It is unclear what these teachers propose to do to reward students for their hard work in their schools.

Alternatives have been suggested, such as giving each student expected GCSE grades, however there are concerns about teachers overgrading students, or worse, systematically undergrading students they don't like, possibly even based on race or religion. This system would be not only impossible to vet but also difficult to perform as it would be difficult to ensure that teachers did not have different standards from each other. All in all, Boris's proposed solution seems like a safer idea.

Happy April fools day :).
