While most concert halls in the world have been dark since the pandemic, Russian orchestras have continued their concert schedules with very few, and sometimes no mitigation strategies to speak of. Approximately five thousand musician deaths have been reported by the Russian authorities thus far, but this number is believed to be heavily undercounted. The renowned Mariinsky Orchestra alone has reported the death of a large swath of their wind section due to the nature of how the instruments are played. The director, Valeriy Gergiev, is now concentrating on string chamber works, where proceeds of the concerts will go towards funeral costs of the deceased musicians.
