Kentucky Dog Rescues Cat from Burning Litter Box

September 30, 2020

BARBOURVILLE--A routine visit to the loo turned deadly yesterday when the litter box at a home in Barbourville, Kentucky spontaneously burst into flames just as Bella, the family cat, was getting down to business. Firefighters on the scene attributed the fire to the fact that the litter box had not been cleaned in six weeks. "Most people just don't realize how flammable cat shit is," said Fire Chief Doug Dozier. The flames quickly engulfed the litter box and spread to the hallway and one of the bedrooms. The family was away at the time, but Eddie, a German Shepherd/Beagle mix, showed courage and resourcefulness. Footage from a video camera, part of a home security system, caught him rushing boldly into the flames, reaching into the litter box, grabbing Bella by the neck, and pulling her to safety. Neighbors saw the smoke and called 911. When firefighters arrived to douse the flames, both animals were waiting by the front door, Eddie still holding Bella in his mouth. The pets were quickly taken to Knox County Veterinary Services where Dr. Tammy Thomason-Smith examined them. "Aside from some minor smoke inhalation, the only injury was a small puncture wound on Bella's neck," she said. Eddie was proclaimed a hero. If not for his quick thinking and courageous actions, Bella would have been barbecue. Eddie took all the attention in stride. "It was nothing anyone wouldn't have done," he said as he chowed down on a Milk Bone. Later he was overheard talking to his pal Scruffy. "Hero? Pfft," he woofed. "I was just trying keep all those delicious nuggets from going up in flames. The damn cat got in my way."
