Zhang Yixing, also known under the stage name of Lay debuted with the 12 member South Korean boy group named Exo. In 2014, two of the twelve members Kris and Lu Han decided that they would part ways with the group and SM Entertainment, Tao also departing in mid 2015 after filing a lawsuit towards the entertainment.
In mid to late 2017, Zhang Yixing, or Lay, decided he would not be promoting with Exo for their Kokobop come back but would instead be pursuing his own solo career. In October of 2018, SM Entertainment announced that Lay had participated in the Chinese version of an Exo song along with participating in a music video. Soon after, on Monday October 15, SM Entertainment announced that Lay would be departing Exo and SM Entertainment to go back to his home in China.
Lay said in an official statement that he apologizes to all of the Exo-l that he let down ahead of this comeback but that he will continue his solo career in China. He has also announced that he and former Exo members, Huang Zitao (Tao) and Wu Yifan (Kris) will be participating together on album that we can expect to be released in February of 2019!
