On Saturday morning of November 16th, 23 year old local diving instructor Lakin Jones was on a river dive with one of his students in his diving class in Beaver Lake, Arkansas. The SportsCo instructor has dived the lake countless times, and nothing has ever gone wrong. “All of the sudden I heard a muffled scream. I looked over and he was struggling under the water,” Jones recalls. The classmate had been drug down by something. Jones grabbed his camera and dove under the water. He was surprised to see a 6’8 great white shark tussling with the young student. He snapped a quick photo as shown. “I didn’t know what to do. I was a lake diver, I learned what to do with alligator attacks. Not shark attacks!” Lakin exclaimed. Luckily, a boat happened to be passing by and picked up the two. After a trip to the hospital, it was found that the shark attack victim had five puncture wounds on his left leg and 2 puncture wounds on his right shoulder. By the time the local police arrived, the shark was out of sight.
For your safety, please stay clear of the southern routes of Beaver Lake. The authorities have been on boats out in the lake, but the shark hasn’t been found yet. Local rangers for Beaver have named the shark Pete.
Know that the Springdale Police are on the case and have sent local anglers on the hunt for the great white.
