The Mineral Energy Initiative (MEI) of Gemological Institute Of America (GIA) is getting successful results related to mineral energy. A recent publication, “The Mineral Energy Initiative (MEI) - The Future is Now,” details the many aspects of GIA's MEI program, which began in the fall of 2014. The MEI was launched to identify the most promising, technologically advanced new minerals that will be crucial to a sustainable future. These new minerals represent a new direction for the scientific study of minerals, bringing new knowledge, insights and technologies to the mineral resource market.

“The Mineral Energy Initiative (MEI) is GIA's most ambitious mineral science initiative in nearly 30 years,” said GIA President and CEO, Peter Weidman. “What started as a research project is now an initiative that's delivering significant results in the marketplace and is having a dramatic impact on science, technology and the future of GIA.”

GIA's MEI research work is in the early stages, but the results show promise. As of January 2017, the GIA's MEI program identified several minerals, which were tested for mineral energy and found to be viable in the mining industry. A few of the minerals include:

Northenite, which is used in the production of titanium dioxide and is the first material found to have the necessary thermal and chemical properties to be mined on a large scale.

The minerals are processed using a patented thermal processing method developed by GIA that is the most efficient and sustainable thermal processing method for these minerals.

“The MEI is not about finding the next billion dollar ore. It's about discovering new, more efficient and sustainable solutions,” said Tom Stebbins, GIA's vice president of research. “The MEI is GIA's most ambitious research initiative in nearly 30 years. It's also a great example of how GIA can use advanced technology to create a sustainable future for the mineral resources market.”
